Suicide: The Ripple Effect

From the Sept. Congregationalist
Words from W.I.S.E.
Support our screening of Suicide, the Ripple Effect

Suicide is an epidemic that takes over 800,000 lives globally every year. In the United States alone there are one million suicide attempts and over 40,000 deaths by suicide annually. Our United States Military is devastatingly impacted with 22 Veterans dying everyday by suicide.

Research has shown that for every one suicide death, over 115 people are directly and secondarily affected. Suicide is a global public health crisis that is not receiving the attention it deserves and therefore millions continue to die and the ripple effects of these deaths continue to devastate parents, children, families, friends and communities.

This film shines light on the reality of this ongoing crisis and highlights effective efforts that are helping people stay well and alive. The film highlights the journey of Kevin Hines, who at age 19, attempted to take his life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. Today Kevin is a world-renowned mental health advocate, motivational speaker and author who travels the globe spreading a message of hope, recovery and wellness.

The WISE team will be hosting a community-wide screening of this powerful film on Tuesday, October 9 at 7:30 PM at the AMC Theater in Webster. Following the movie, we will have a panel of mental health professionals (including our own Despina Mitchell) and advocates available to answer questions from the audience.  In addition, Youth and adult volunteers will be providing free child care at the church during the screening.

This is an on-demand screening - tickets must be purchased in advance, and we must sell a minimum number in order for the showing to take place.  Watch for an email and Facebook posts starting the week of Sept. 3 with information that you can share with your friends. In the meantime, if you’d like to reserve your tickets, please go to https://gathr.us/s/23901

Our WISE vote

From the August Congregationalist

In an effort to energize UCC congregations to support mentally ill people in their midst, the 2015 General Synod adopted a resolution to develop a network of churches that are welcoming, inclusive, supportive and engaged (WISE) for mental health. On June 24, 2018, the members of United Church of Christ, Congregational, voted to approve our own W.I.S.E. covenant, becoming just the ninth congregation to do so.  Our vote has been recorded by the UCC Mental Health Network, and the official recognition is on its way.

While the designation is, in some ways, a milestone, it is in other ways merely a blip on the radar.  A name on a list and certificate on the wall are meaningless unless we are living the commitment. From that perspective, we have been WISE for a long time.  Since we embarked on this journey, many stories have been shared about how members of our church have supported each other as they or their family members have struggled with mental health challenges.  In the coming months the WISE team will continue our formal ministry of bringing information regarding mental health and support for those who struggle. In the meantime, each of us can continue to live the WISE commitment that has long been inherent in our community.

What are some things you can do to show your support?
  • Reach out - Call or text someone whom you know is struggling to see how they are doing
  • Be there - visit, offer to wait with them at a doctor appointment or in a hospital waiting room
  • Lighten the load - deliver a meal, offer childcare, or run errands
  • Listen and Just. Show. Up.
